Platforms as the Enterprise Operating Model

AI accelerates knowledge work; platforms keep it aligned. Encode constraints once and apply them systematically so an organisation can move at AI speed while operating at enterprise scale.

🌱 A rough idea, planted recently. Expect rough edges — it will grow.

The question that stuck with me from Luca Galante and Kaspar von Grünberg’s writing on platforms: what happens when platform engineering stops being an IT discipline and becomes the way the organisation operates?

    The argument

    • AI accelerates the creation and execution of knowledge work. More code, more documents, more changes, faster.
    • Without structure, that speed produces fragmentation rather than progress: every team (and every agent) solves the same problem slightly differently.
    • Platforms keep the work aligned, consistent and integrated.
    • The goal is to move at AI speed while operating at enterprise scale, by
      • encoding constraints once and applying them systematically, and
      • reducing the need for repeated interpretation and coordination.
    • Complexity that used to live in many people’s heads is increasingly handled by systems.

    What platform engineering is for

    • Reduce duplication.
    • Shorten feedback loops.
    • Make change controllable.
    • Adopt new technology faster, because systems already have clear interfaces and clear constraints.

That last point is the bridge to AI: the same clear contracts that let a platform swap a component underneath you are what let an agent act safely on your behalf (Contract-Driven Development). A golden path is a constraint encoded once; an Internal Developer Platform is where those paths live; Agentic Development Platforms extend the audience from developers to agents.
