    What it’s about

A space-opera series set far in the future, in a galaxy where artificial intelligence is outlawed. Hank, a salvage scrapper, stumbles on a living AI. It tells him an older, hostile AI is still out there and threatens everything, and soon Hank is on the run from the military and bounty hunters. Over the books a crew forms around him, each member bringing their own history and grudges, and the politics of the galaxy get more tangled.

    What I learned

AI is powerful and dangerous at the same time. The series lives in that tension. The AI that helps Hank is the most useful thing he’s ever found, and the reason AI was banned is very real. There’s a fine balance between what AI can do for us and what it can do to us.

Companionship matters. The crew is the heart of the books. People (and machines) who look out for each other get further than lone heroes.

Be kind, and learn to forgive. Characters who were enemies become allies. Holding on to personal anger distorts judgement, and the later books show what happens when someone lets it decide for them.

Keep personal frustration out of the bigger picture. The right call for the group isn’t always the one that feels good in the moment.

    What I applied

This is reflection. The series made me take AI risk seriously as a reader, before I had to think about it as an engineer. Now I work with coding agents every day, and I think about guardrails as part of the platform rather than an afterthought: least-privilege access, clear boundaries on what an agent can change, observability so you can see what it did, and a human reviewing anything that matters. The way this site is built and published, with a privacy gate and git as a safety net, is a small example (How I Take Notes: Capture, Distil, Resurface).

The softer lessons travel too. Teams, like crews, work when people look out for each other and leave grudges at the door.
